A Little Personal Photographic History

When I first met the man who was to become my husband, he was a founder member of a local camera club and a group within it called "Vision 70". One of my first encounters with Richard was when he had heard that I was very musical. He called me over to his part of the office in which I was at that time working, and asked me if I'd be willing to look through some of his slides and suggest some music to go with them.

Well this was the beginning of the rest of my life! I did as he asked, and immediately became interested in photography also - mainly so that I could take a pro-active part within the club.

Back then of course, we were doing analogue photography, mainly in slide format, and one of the things the Vision 70 group did was to put on slide shows using a duo-fade system (designed by Richard), of our local area, i.e. Hardy's Dorset. (Some may be aware that the infamous Thomas Hardy was born, lived his life, and wrote his many books, in this area).

The shows were so popular that they would be booked out every weekend, which was when enough club volunteers were free to manage the equipment and show them.

It was all great fun, and as time went on, I gradually began to develop my own photographic skills, right up to 1996, when I developed Myalgic Encephalopathy, became bedridden for many months, and have subsequently until very recently, had to put photography on the back-burner.

I'm thrilled to say that a few months ago, my husband bought me a Canon EOS 400D, and only this week after making do with the 17-55mm kit lens, I acquired a Canon 17-85mm zoom lens with image stabilisation - a necessity for me since I cannot take a tripod around with me because of its added weight (unless we're going inside a building just for the purpose of photographing its architecture).

I've been able to do some walking again, which is an intermittent thing according to my wellness at any time, but during those better days and subject to weather conditions, I've been able to accompany Richard on some shoots. OK, this has entailed him putting his hand against the small of my back and gently pushing me up any hills we encounter and the walks have not exceeded a mile overall either. But we've managed to find some suitable areas where there isn't too far to go in order to find some dramatic scenery.

With the introduction of Digital - a wonderful invention - I have needed to do a lot of re-learning, and of course there is an awful lot that I had also forgotten over the years of disability. (The same applied to art in general sad to say!)

We don't have beautiful ice and snow scenes here, and much of the drama to be found in places like the Grand Canyon are just not an option for us, but nevertheless, England, Ireland and Scotland have some amazing scenery, even from the lower heights that I'm able to achieve - or from anywhere higher up where we can take our car of course.

My aim is to improve my skills. I want constructive critique! Please, no slamming or destructive negativity, but I know anyone who knows Photography as a subject, will be gentle. I'm relying on this!

Some Random Interesting And Hilarious Facts

:bulletred: At the end of that initial meeting with Richard in our office, he gave me his card with his home telephone number on it as well as the camera club's address and phone number.

:bulletred: The very weekend following that discussion I was moved from that office to another one, as I was a key-worker and the job required flexibility. I was devastated as I was sure I would never see Richard again.

:bulletred: As I sat in another office just a little further along from Richard, I could see him through the glass partitions, and I was willing him to come and ask me out. He didn't, and at the end of the day, I reluctantly took the bus to the B&B where I was staying at the time.

:bulletred: Back at the guest house I became incredibly depressed and had nothing to do of any interest. Then I remembered that someone had told me Richard often used to go to London. I had all my belongings up in London, and wanted them brought down to where I was. I wondered... I got the card out and looked at Richard's phone number...

:bulletred: I took the plunge and phoned him, asking him when he was likely to go to London again, and would he be willing to take me with him to collect my stuff.

:bulletred: Twenty-five minutes later, Richard was ringing the guest house bell.

:bulletred: This was the beginning of a life-long relationship! I had to get a divorce from my first husband who had gone off with another girl who had had his twins. He saw me through everything; we bought a house together, and as they say, lived happily ever after - almost! (My illness has not been conducive to a life of happiness!)

:bulletred: We arranged for our wedding day to be 10th August 1974, after my divorce was through.

:bulletred: My Decree Absolute came through much earlier than anticipated so we actually married on 8th June 1974.

:bulletred: After the wedding we went and collected my wedding dress!!!!!!

:bulletred: We had been invited out to a meal with lots of our photographer friends that evening. While we were there, we announced our marriage, and everyone went into shock! It was SUCH fun!

:bulletred: The following day, the person who's house we'd had the dinner at, took our Wedding photos for us, with his beautiful gardens as our setting.

:bulletred: So as not to totally offend all Richard's relatives (mine didn't count), we held a Blessing Ceremony at the same church where we had married, followed by a meal at a local hotel, when I again donned my beautiful wedding dress, and treated it as though this were our actual wedding. (I hated every minute of it as it seemed like a complete façade!! :giggle:)

So there you have it! I'm sure we've done many more things back to front since then, but that's how it all began...

By the way, a particular passion of mine is CATS and KITTENS! I LOVE them!

Here are some photos of Molly and Murry...

Just To Say...

Just To Say...

I just want to say thank you to everyone who has so generously commented on and/or faved my various Welsh photos, which continue to trickle in a day at a time. I do hope no-one is getting bored with them because OMGosh the countryside there is so captivating and I really can't wait to return there again next year! When I look at our local scenery in comparison, although very beautiful and different, for me the impact just isn't the same!

We're going to the Lake District in September, so that will be another returning holiday after several years to a much loved area of England. Yup, hopefully lots more photos after that too! lol!

Thanks, too, for all the love and comments about the poor mum cat we encountered in Wales who had to be put down. I can't bear to look at her pictures any more as it just brings a huge lump to my throat... I now need to move on from that episode, as I'm sure you can understand.

Photomatix 3.0.3CR2

On my return home I discovered a new version of Photomatix HDR and downloaded the free upgrade. This now has the added feature of Exposure Blending, which I think has much potential if you don't want to have the full HDR effect. You still need to make your different exposures in RAW first, as it doesn't work from one single image input (unlike Dynamic Photo HDR, which does both according to your desired results). I'm not sure yet what I think of this new feature, and as with all things when trying out various procedures to compare, it can be very confusing to decide which one gives the very best result! lol!

I use two screens as dual, so that I can compare my pictures on both. This too, can be a little confusing, but it does help usually in deciding whether or not my uploads will look right on most people's screens.

Some people have asked me what it is that's different about my photos. Well, I generally process them by making the original RAW look as good as possible, then put it through a simple tonemapping process in Dynamic Photo HDR. Generally speaking I find this gives a slightly painterly effect. They do, however, need to have a final sharpening in PS or PSP, as the tonemapping process does seem to remove that vital edge, which is ok for very small pictures, but not when you go on to enlarge them for large prints.

If anyone would like prints of any of my photos via dA, please let me know by note, and I will re-upload them with print availability on my :iconannakirsten: account where I have a Premium Print account. If anyone in the UK would like an original Giclee print directly from me, then please note me and tell me the size you'd like so that I can give a price quote etc.

Many Thanks to everyone who has added this account to their watch lists and fav'd some of my photos so far. Please forgive me if I don't always say thank you for every :+fav:, also if I sometimes :+fav: and :sprint:. This is because I have my other account too, and need time for personal creativity as well. Equally, please don't feel obliged to thank me for faves I make :)

If anyone features any of my photos, could you please send me a NOTE to let me know? Having over 500 watchers between my two accounts makes it impossible to read every single journal, which I'm sure you can appreciate! :)

Sad Edit: Back from Holiday!

Journal Entry: Wed Jul 9, 2008, 4:33 AM

SAD EDIT:

We heard from the site owners that the RSPCA managed to collect the feral mum, but when a vet examined her, she found the damage was such that she would have had to have the leg amputated, followed by a fortnight under sedation to begin the recovery process, followed by more nursing care for some considerable time. As none of this was conducive to the well-being of a feral cat who really was wild, and her chances of survival thereafter in that environment being no better than her current condition, they made the sad decision to have her put down.

This particularly upset us as she was a nursing mum to the kittens, although they are of an age to be able to survive without that sustenance, and their dad is coping fine with catching the food they require, and of course, having photos of her and seeing what a fine cat she was makes it all the more potent. However, she was obviously having terrible difficulties in getting around and in a lot of pain whenever on the move, so I guess the right decision was made after all. :cries: The chances of her survival were pretty low to start with, it seems, but I have to admit that just for a few seconds we really wondered if we had done the right thing in reporting our findings!

All Good Things....

We had a fantastic holiday, and it was not just great to be back in one of our favourite spots, Snowdonia in North Wales, but we were also joined by our daughter and her best friend for the week. We hired a lovely large caravan (even the bed was comfortable!!!) and the girls camped at night in their tent, but we spent our days and evenings using the caravan as main base.

Each day we went out to different parts of the exhilarating countryside and took many, many photos. I was just well enough to cope with a small amount of walking too, which helped when it came to getting to the places I needed to for some of the best shots. There will be a lot of beautiful photos to come into my gallery, but I'm going to mete them out so as not to overload everyone. They vary quite a lot too, according to the weather conditions, but overall, one of the best aspects of the whole trip was to be able to capture some of what I saw and experienced. (The last time we were there was over 11 years ago, and in the days of analogue.)

It was good, too, to have a break from my computer (except for processing my photos each day) and I was able to spend my evenings doing something I rarely do - knitting a cardigan which I began over a year ago, and still haven't finished it!!

A couple of days before leaving the site, we discovered a whole family of feral cats and kittens! They were completely wild and wouldn't allow anyone near. The dad has only half a tail and we saw him when we first arrived and thought he belonged to one of the holiday-makers... until we saw him eventually taking a rat to his family who all came rushing out to greet him.

Feral Cats 1

This is the mother and one of her kitties suckling her. The very sad part about this is that one of her back legs is entrapped by a load of blue twine, which on photographing her and enlarging the picture, became clear was the reason why she could only hold that leg up against her body, making her hobble every where and looking painful. We told the owners what we saw (and have today sent photos), and asked them if they would contact the RSPCA to see if they could capture her long enough to free up that leg. They did so, and as we left, they were waiting for them to arrive. Hopefully we will be able to discover that all is well with this poor mum.

Feral Cats 2

Here is the best shot my husband was able to take of the four kittens. They were almost impossible to get on camera as they were constantly on the move - but ohh so gorgeous!

We were welcomed home by our two healthy and well-fed kitties waiting for their cuddles and their special treat (an extra meal) on our return. Both Molly and Murry have followed us all over the house ever since, and I finally had to shut poor Molly out of this room so that I could write this journal because she wanted so much fussing!

DISABLED COMMENTS 'TILL I GET BACK

I'm really sorry, but I've had to take the drastic action of disabling all comments and incoming deviations as of now so that I can concentrate on the many things I need to do in preparation for going away. I can't bear things building up, it just causes me un-needed anxiety, so that is why I've done this.

I hope to be back in action again sometime soon after 7th July.

Thanks for understanding.

THANK YOU

Firstly a huge thank you to all who have shown such caring due to the subject of my last journal. I have felt very blessed by you all, and am grateful for the understanding, well-wishes and prayers afforded me and on my behalf . I am marginally better than I was feeling when I wrote that last journal, but still a long way from being able to get out to some of the more amazing parts of our Dorset countryside for those lovely dramatic shots. Meanwhile, macro is something I've been playing around with, as that's literally in our back garden, and I can pick my moments for doing it, then rest up.

For anyone still wondering about ME/CFS, there is information and some links from my shoutboard over at this page on my other account; scroll down to see them.

So What's With The Poll?

Thanks to everyone who took part in my poll about macro photography.

The reason I asked the questions was because there seem to be such varying ideas about what constitutes true macro that even I was getting very confused.

First however, let me point people to this link written very comprehensively by our very own Macro Gallery Director. She does know what she's talking about too!

Secondly, I don't know where the concept that 1:1 = life-sized = full frame comes from.

OK, we know that 1:1 upwards is within the true macro range, although there is a little leeway allowable when using a proper macro lens on a small subject, as it isn't always possible to be totally accurate with the 1:1 setting on the lens, unless rigidly sticking with manual focus - again not always possible, depending on the movement factors involved, etc. As ^hellfirediva says quite clearly, a sunset taken with a macro lens is not a macro photograph just because it was taken with said macro lens. These lenses are often capable of also taking long distance shots of scenes too, but they are no longer at the macro focusing range for this. (And its important also not to get confused with the so-called "macro setting" or "micro setting" on a normal zoom lens too! These are rarely true macro setting that will give you a proper 1:1 ratio (although there are sometimes ways of getting there by adding extension tubes etc).

Full Frame for 1:1 a Must?

No. The sensor in the camera is a certain width and height. The object being photographed is also a certain dimension in size. To make this easier to understand, let's suppose the sensor in the camera is 25mm wide (mine is 22.2mm wide). The insect or other subject is only 5mm long. This means that the subject will fit into the width of the frame 5 times.

Remember that there are limitations on the closest focal range? Well, that closest focal range for a macro lens with max. 1:1 ratio on its own is at exactly that range; there's no way to get any further magnification of the subject unless extension tubes (or other methods) are used. It is therefore pretty conclusive that 1:1 does not necessarily mean full-frame!

Difference between Cose-Up and Macro?

Close-up is usually what you get with the "macro (or "micro") setting on a general or zoom lens. Again, the link given above discusses this aspect in some depth. There is also discussion in one or more of the articles about the use of extension tubes.

Close-up does not usually meet the minimum 1:1 macro range, although even within the macro range, people sometimes like to refer to such photos as close-ups rather than macro - that's a matter of simple choice and there's nothing wrong with that.

Why Did I Carry Out The Poll Originally?

I did this because I was getting told by some people that my macro photos weren't such, since the subject I was photographing (at 1:1 or more) didn't fill the frame. I, too, was getting confused about this and actually got hung up on the whole subject for a while, because I hate miscats, and certainly hate the idea of putting anything of mine into the wrong gallery. (Some people admitted in the poll that they avoided certain categories because they didn't like to be caught out doing anything wrong.)

The original intention was not so that I could give everyone a lecture about what constitutes real macro photography - I'm still learning all about this myself! But I have shared above what I have now learnt, and I pass this on, hoping to clear up those particular points.

Inactivity. Feature - fiamen

Journal Entry: Tue Jun 10, 2008, 6:57 AM

Inactivity

I've been totally incapacitated from doing any photography during the past couple of weeks because I'm going through a bad patch with the myalgic encephalitis from which I suffer, making even the weight of my camera too much for me to hold long enough to shoot with it.

This is naturally depressing for me, and I'm having to watch my husband go off on his own to do walks and photo-shoots because I'm just not up to it (something he would much prefer to have my company for). The very hot weather (which isn't yet as hot as it gets) drains me too, and there are many times I find it hard to get through my days. Then of course I start getting concerned that I have all the gadgets I have, costing a lot of money, but can't get on and use them - let alone go off out into the countryside and simply enjoy being there! Thankfully I feel less guilty at the knowledge that my husband at least makes use of my macro lens!

Self-pity is a daily struggle just at the moment, and I have to force myself to dis-allow it to affect life, but to try to focus on the little things I can still do, even if its to just enjoy the company of my cats when I'm otherwise alone and feeling too unwell to be creative on my computer.

I cling to the fact that this will pass, never knowing how long these phases will last (sometimes weeks, sometimes months).

So basically that's the reason why I've not been able to capture anything particularly stunning to add to my gallery. I'm not asking for any sympathy - please! This is just by way of explanation of what its like living with this extremely frustrating illness, and why not much is getting produced right now.

SPECIAL FEATURE :iconfiamen:

Some of the prettiest scenery shots I've come across lately have been taken by =fiamen from Poland. In particular, the shades of greens and the colours of the skies and water (where included) have appealed to me for their magic touch, reminding me very much of some of the prettier parts of SW Ireland (a country with which I have much connection by ancestry on my father's side of the family).

She uses a Nikon D200 according to the EXIF information on her images. Not a cheap camera! Beyond that I know very little about her equipment or her techniques, other than to say that I enjoy her sense of composition also.

Here are some of her photos which appealed to me most..
